Sanibel Island is one of the best known of the many barrier islands of Lee County, Florida. Sanibel, which is known worldwide for its magnificent shelling, is connected to the mainland by a three-mile-long causeway. More than 200 varieties of shells can be found on Sanibel's beaches, especially after extremely high or low tides.
